An inhalation drug with a bronchodilator effect that facilitates the free flow of air in the airways. It is used in diseases with bronchospasm. The effect occurs after a few minutes and is usually maintained for 4 to 6 hours.
What does Ventolin inhaler contain and how does it work?
The active substance is salbutamol (salbutamol sulphate). It is a substance belonging to sympathomimetics. The action of all sympathomimetics is to stimulate a certain type of receptors, called adrenergic receptors, located on the surface of specific cells of our body. In the case of inhaled salbutamol, adrenergic beta2 receptors located in the bronchial smooth muscle are stimulated. Inhalation of the drug is intended to allow rapid and direct access to the place of its action, i.e. to the beta2 receptors in the airways and to minimize systemic side effects. Stimulation of these receptors leads to muscle relaxation and bronchodilation, which facilitates the free flow of air into the lungs. The ventilation of the lungs improves and the patient experiences significant relief or complete resolution of breathlessness caused by the contraction of the muscles of the respiratory tract.
When to use Ventolin inhaler?
The product is recommended for the treatment of bronchospasm in patients with asthma and in the treatment of reversible obstruction (reduction of patency) of the airways. The preparation can be used preventively before exercise in patients suffering from exercise asthma or before the expected contact with an allergen causing dyspnea.
The preparation is recommended for the treatment of acute, severe attacks of bronchial asthma as well as for the treatment of bronchospasm conditions not subjected to the usual methods of treatment.
When not to use this preparation?
Unfortunately, even if there are indications to use the preparation, it can not always be used. You can not use the preparation if you are allergic (you are hypersensitive) to any of the ingredients.
The product should not be used to prevent abortion and to prevent preterm delivery. Salbutamol inhibits uterine contraction. Administered orally or intravenously is used to prevent premature delivery (this is an indication not registered in Poland).
Dosage of Ventolin inhaler
Use the product as directed by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose, because it will not increase the effectiveness of the drug and may harm your health and life. If you have any doubts regarding the use of the preparation, consult a physician. Ad hoc preparation is recommended. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, the usual doses are:
Adults: To interrupt sudden bronchoconstriction: 1 to 2 doses (100 to 200 g).
Preventing against exercise or contact with an allergen: 2 doses (2 times 100 g) 10-15 min. before the effort or contact with the allergen.
Children: To interrupt bronchospasm, as well as to exercise or contact with the allergen: 1 to 2 doses (100 to 200 g).
Remember never to exceed 8 doses (800 g) per day. Taking children’s doses should be under the control of an adult.
Inhalation fluid from a nebulizer:
Adults and children: The dose depends on the severity and type of the disease. A single dose of 2.5 to 5 mg is usually sufficient. If necessary, the dose can be repeated up to 4 times a day. Higher doses (up to 40 mg in adults) can only be used in a hospital setting. The efficacy and safety of the drug in children under 18 months of age have not been fully confirmed. Can Ventolin inhaler be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
During pregnancy, do not use any medicine without consulting your doctor!
It is very important that before using any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding, consult a physician and explain beyond any doubt the potential risks and benefits associated with the use of the drug. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, please inform the doctor prescribing the prescription for this medicine.
In pregnant women, the use of salbutamol is possible only if in the doctor’s opinion the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
Before using the medicine during breastfeeding, consult a doctor who will assess the risk-benefit ratio in your case.
